Lawn weeds are plants which are in the wrong place. In a lawn, any plant which is not grass is considered a weed. Even some undesirable grasses can be weeds!

Weeds in lawns come in many varieties. From the quick growing annuals such as lesser trefoil and hairy bittercress. To the more pernicious perennial weeds such as yarrow and dandelions. Each weed has a good reason why it likes to grow in a lawn and they have different approaches and difficulty in eradicating them.
