Moss is a collection of small flowerless plants that typically grow in dense green clumps or in mats. They most commonly grow on lawns in damp or shady locations.

Moss in lawns

The individual moss plants are composed of simple leaves that are generally only one cell thick. They are attached to a stem and only have a limited role in conducting water and nutrients.

A mossy lawn is often a result of a problem with the grass. It will constantly compete with grass for space. Improve the growing conditions for grass and the moss will lose the battle. A struggling lawn will become very mossy.
