The Crane Fly is the adult for of the leatherjacket grub. They are also called daddy-long-legs and look like giant mosquitoes! These grubs are one of the main pests of UK lawns.

In August, the adult crane flies mate and lay eggs in the soil. These eggs hatch and the grubs eat their way through the roots of the soil over the next few months. The result of this munching can be very damaging to lawns in the UK.
