A scarifier, (or dethatcher in the US) is a machine that removes thatch from lawns.

Types of scarifiers include those which are motor powered and those pulled behind a tractor.

A rake is not a scarifier, although some media still refer to them as such.
They work by powering vertical metal blades. These rotate on an axle and dig into the lawn and pull material out.

Using a scarifer on your lawn
