The cockchafer, also called the chafer beetle or May bug, is a European beetle of the genus Melolontha, in the family Scarabaeidae.

Once abundant throughout Europe is was once a major pest to arable crop farmland. It was nearly eradicated in the middle of the 20th century through extensive pesticides use. Since an increase in regulation of pest control, its numbers have started to grow again.

Chafer beetles can be a pest in lawns. In large numbers they can eat their way through the roots of grass and the lawn can be severely damaged. If a badger or fox find these grubs in a lawn, the damage caused can be severe.
