The brown chafer (serica brunnea) is the common name for a species of cockchafer. These are beetles in the family Scarabaeidae.

Chafers in lawns

Once abundant throughout Europe is was once a major pest to arable crop farmland. It was nearly eradicated in the middle of the 20th century through extensive pesticides use. Since an increase in regulation of pest control, its numbers have started to grow again.

Brown Chafers can be a pest in lawns. In large numbers they can eat their way through the roots of grass and the lawn damaged. If a badger or fox find these grubs in a lawn, they cause havoc.
