Leather jackets are crane fly larvae and have been eating their way through your lawn.

Even well into December, the soil down here in the Even well into December, the soil down here in the South West of England is still warm enough to germinate grass seed. Within 2 weeks this seed is already pushing up new shots. I thought I'd have to wait until spring. Doesn't look like it'll be cold anytime soon.

There seems to be a lot of interesting slime mould There seems to be a lot of interesting slime moulds around at the moment. The wonderful, curious organisms do no harm to your grass and can be squirted off with a jet of water. They don't last long so enjoy them as an interesting garden curiosity.
